Apprenticeship Programs in Utah

An excellent way to train for a career in Utah is through an apprenticeship program.  There are apprenticeships for many different types of careers.  An apprenticeship allows individuals to train by receiving training on the job. This allows individuals to receive an income while training.  They will also receive other required training at no cost to them. The state Department of Labor will have information on apprenticeship programs that are registered within this state.  All apprenticeship programs must have sponsors including the employers that participate in the apprenticeship and are registered with the Department.

 Electrical Inside Wireman

 There is an inside wireman apprenticeship offered through the Utah Electrical JATC division out of Salt Lake City Utah.  This program prepares individuals for rewarding careers as a wireman.  The program will allow an individual to receive an income that is a percentage of that earned by Journeyman Wireman.  Increases in wages can be earned every 6 months.  This program will cover 8000 hours of on the job training over the duration of the apprenticeship.  There will also be classes that need to be completed.  Individuals who wish to be accepted into a program will need to receive a minimum score on an aptitude test.  They can be required to have completed certain math and science coursework in high school or to already have some electrical employment experience.

Electrician

 There are various sponsoring employers for the Electrician Apprenticeship program in the state of Utah.  This program is one that will encompass four years of training.  Apprentices will need to work to receive on the job training for 2000 hours each year.  They will also need to attend 180 hours of classes each year for a total of 720 hours.  Courses will teach apprentices about electrical code.  They will also learn about blueprint reading and electrical theory.  These are just a few of the topics that will be covered during the classroom training.  Individuals will be well prepared to work safely and effectively in various aspects of the electrical and related field.

Iron Workers

 There are iron workers apprenticeship programs for those who wish to train for this career in Utah.  One of the programs is provided under the direction of the Local 27 union.  This program is one that will span a length of four years.  Students will need to complete 204 hours of classes each year.  These classes will be addition to the required hours that will be spent receiving on the job training.  Iron workers will learn to perform various duties pertaining to the iron industry and will be prepared to work in a variety of settings.

 Operating Engineers

 Local Union #4 is one of the unions backing apprentices for training to become operating engineers.  Operating engineer apprentices will spend several years with on the job training.  During that time, they will also need to complete classroom studies.  Operating engineers will be working with heavy duty equipment for construction. In some cases, engineers will be driving and operating this equipment. In other cases, they will learn to repair and maintain this type of equipment.  This Union is located in Salt Lake City.

Community Colleges

 Many community colleges in Utah participate in apprenticeship training programs.  They provide the classroom training for various apprenticeship programs that are offered within the state.  In some cases, the course work and other aspects of apprenticeship training can be used towards obtaining a degree.  Anyone attending one of the programs will also need to be registered as an apprentice and will need to be receiving the on the job training from a sponsoring employer.  Apprentices have one or two nights each week throughout much of the year that they will need to attend classes for apprenticeships.

Laborer

 There are apprenticeship programs for individuals who will work in the construction industry.  The programs are offered in part through the Laborer’s International Union of North America.  Participants will be provided with the job training they need to work as laborers for various construction fields.  They can work in many different fields that are part of the building industry.  Laborers are often not required to complete as many years of training as some of the other specialties.  They will, of course, still receive a great deal of hands on experience and any other required classroom studies.

Salary Information – Apprenticeship in Utah

The apprentice salaries in Utah will differ from occupation to occupation. An Electrician’s salary will vary widely from a Carpenter’s salary simply because they are two completely different occupations. Salaries may also differ depending on other important factors such as city, education, experience, certification and additional skills.

Electrician – earns an average of $48,000 per year.

Iron workers – earn approximately $42,650 annually.

Operating Engineers – earn averagely $57,100 yearly.

Laborers – earn an average of $32,000 per year.

Do apprentices get paid weekly? The average weekly wage for an apprentice is approximately $250 depending on the industry sector. Some higher apprenticeships can pay $350-$450 per week.
