Financial Aid
You can often receive some level of financial aid if you are taking a credit based phlebotomy program. This is especially true if your training is held at some type of college. You should contact the financial aid office for details as to whether or not the particular phlebotomy program you are planning to take is eligible for financial aid. If you find that it is eligible, you must complete a Student Form for Financial Aid as well as any particular forms required by the financial aid office.
Financial aid is need-based. If you do not have a high income and/or you do not have many assets, you are likely to be approved for higher levels of financial aid. The same is true if you are a dependent student or if you have children. It is not uncommon to be able to receive financial aid that will cover the entire cost of the training program.
Scholarships
When you find a phlebotomy school, you should talk to the program administrator to determine if the school offers any scholarships for phlebotomy students. Do take the time necessary to submit an application for scholarships if they are available. You might very well be approved for one or more types of scholarships and be able to pay for your training.
It is very likely that you will be able to apply for scholarships if you are attending a college. You can even use a scholarship search online to find types for which you can apply. There are times when you will receive enough scholarships funds to pay for all of your education. Employers and other organizations in your area might also have scholarship opportunities available to you.
Unemployment and Public Assistance Offices
You might be someone who is receiving unemployment benefits. If this is the case you should contact your local unemployment office to discuss your desire to train in the area of phlebotomy. There are often career training programs that are provided by the unemployment offices. You should find out if any phlebotomy programs are offered. If phlebotomy programs are not provided directly, you might still be able to use tuition assistance or tuition waivers to attend a training course.
Similar type programs could be available to you if you are someone who is receiving public assistance benefits. There are various Welfare-to-Work programs, which are designed to make sure that individuals and families can become more self-sufficient. You have a good opportunity to receive free phlebotomy training if you are receiving benefits.
Employer-Sponsored
Do talk to your employer if you are working for a healthcare provider who employs phlebotomy technicians. You should let them know that you would like to change careers to work in the area of phlebotomy. Many employers are willing to provide you with tuition assistance to train for a new career if you will then work for the same company in that career. You will need to find out how long they will require you to work for them after you receive your free phlebotomy training.
You should contact healthcare providers in your area. It is possible that some of these providers will higher qualified and motivated individuals before they have received training. They might then provide you with training (if they are an accredited training provider) or send you to a location of their choice for training. If an employer hires you before you have received training, they should be providing that training without any charge to you.
Military Benefits
You might not need to take a phlebotomy-training program if you already trained and served as a phlebotomy technician in the military. You should contact a healthcare provider to find out if you would need any additional training. If you served in another capacity in the military, you should determine if your educational benefits would pay for you to receive phlebotomy training.
High Demand
Phlebotomy professionals are often in high demand. Sometimes it is difficult for healthcare providers to find enough qualified phlebotomy technicians. If this is the case, there might be some programs to provide free training to individuals who qualify. There might also be programs to help individuals who are displaced workers, homemakers or adult students who are looking to improve their lives through further training.
