There are many opportunities for individuals to train for good paying careers through apprenticeship programs in Alaska. Many of the training schools are located in Anchorage or Fairbanks. However, there are various teaching modes that can be used to reach out to individuals living in more rural areas. For those interested in training for employment in the field of insulation, the State of Alaska offers an professional apprenticeship program. This program is offered through Heat & Frost Insulators & Allied Workers Union – Local 97. Although the main training facility is located in South Anchorage, the program also offers a mobile training facility that visits various locations through the state. With more than 50 years of experience in training future insulators, Local 97 is committed to providing a quality educational experience for all its participants. The program covers all training needed to begin working as an insulator, focusing on commercial and industrial applications. To complete it, 6000 hours of training must be done over a four year period.
Millwright Training Center
The Millwright Training Center is now located in the Carpenters Training Center. The school is found in Fairbanks, Alaska. The program prepares individuals to work as millwrights. They will receive the necessary on the job hours as well as complete other methods of training related to their career area. Additional classes and various other types of study modules are also used to make it possible for people who do not live near these areas in Alaska to still complete training in this career field.
Carpenters Training Center
The Carpenters training center is part of an apprentice program that was first established in the 1950’s. Apprentices will study for four years to complete this particular program. There will be on the job training as well as classroom instruction. The program will include 6000 hours of instruction. There are training options for floor coverers, glaziers and painters in addition to the carpentry options. Individuals will work for participating employers to receive an income as well as their on the job training areas. Roofers and Waterproofers
Training is available for individuals who want to train to be roofers. Instruction in waterproofing is also provided. The program is offered through the Local 190. Individuals who are interested in applying to train in this particular field can contact the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee. They should apply with the program Coordinator with the Anchorage Office. Apprentices can earn good wages while they gain the on the job experience required. They will be provided with the classes needed to finish an approved apprenticeship program as well.
Teamsters
Individuals can enter apprentice programs to become Teamsters. There are opportunities to learn to become diesel mechanics, construction equipment drivers, engineers and various other professionals in the heavy machinery industry. There are a range of programs being offered through the training facility on Ship Avenue in Anchorage. Programs last from two to four years with the hours of training also varying from one training type to another. Individuals will receive many hours of on the job training each year. They will also need to attend a specified numbers of classroom hours each year as well.
Alaska Works Construction Apprenticeships
Some programs are sponsored through the Alaska Works program. They are intended to put people who are out of work back to work and to provide them with a successful career. There are various opportunities and sponsoring companies for those who want to enter into the construction trade. Individuals will receive an income while they work. Farming Apprenticeship
There are apprentice opportunities for individuals who wish to work on farms. They typically receive room and board as well as a stipend while gaining experience working and operating a farm. One such program in Hawaii is provided by the Calypso Farm and Ecology Center. Their program involves training 5 days per week. The workweek is over 40 hours. Individuals who wish to pursue farming careers can look for other farms offering programs as well.

Salary Information – Apprenticeship in Alaska
The average salary for an apprenticeship in Alaska ranges from $30,000 to $80,000 annually. Apprentice salaries in Alaska will differ from occupation to occupation. An Electrician’s salary will vary widely from a Carpenter’s salary simply because they are two completely different occupations. Salaries may also differ depending on other important factors such as city, education, experience, certification and additional skills. A breakdown of the salaries according to various different apprentices is as follows:
A plumber: $74,570 per year.
An electrician: $79,340 per year.
A bricklayer: $70,938 per year.
A carpenter: $69,390 per year
A farmer: $31,000 per year.
Apprenticeship Program FAQs.
What are the requirements to apply?
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must be an Alaskan resident and hold a valid driver’s license.
- You must have a social security card and high school documentation.
- You must be physically capable of performing work and drug free.
Applicants will be required to undergo drug screening upon acceptance into the apprenticeship.
How much does the program cost? There is no tuition for this program, but, there is a $300 book fee and a tool requirement of about $750 upon acceptance into the program. There are usually grants available to pay for tool and book costs if you meet certain criteria.
How long is the apprenticeship? Each apprenticeship takes approximately 4 years to complete. The apprenticeship is a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training.
Will I be paid while in school? Apprentices are not paid during classroom instruction, however, majority of the students count as unemployed during this time. Once the required classroom instruction is complete, an apprentice can begin working with a union contractor. A first year apprentice’s wage begins at $23 per hour and depending on craft, an apprentice progresses in wage 5% for every 875 hours or 10% for every 1300 hours.
