Training Requirements

In most cases, you will need to complete a training program in MIchigan before you can sit to be certified. The program will cover at least 100 hours of study. This will included classroom lessons and then supervised clinical experiencing . Greater Horizon Training Institute

The Greater Horizon Training Institute accepts students who receive PATH benefits. This can help an individual to potentially receive their certified nursing assistant training for free. The PATH program is called Partnership Accountability Training Program. This is one of the employment programs through the Workforce Development Program in Michigan.

The purpose of this program is to help individuals rise about above their challenging situations to become well employed and thus no longer need cash assistance. The program can help individuals to identify job training options (such as CNA training) that would be a good fit for them. If you are a Native American Indian, who is planning to attend the CNA program at Wayne County Community College, you might qualify for the Native American Indian Tuition Waiver Program. It will not be possible to apply for this program unless you have lived in Michigan for at least the past year. The CNA course is divided into three sections. There is the theory part. There is a lab segment. And of course there is a clinical experience segment. The clinical portion is at a long term care facility in the area. A certified Red Cross Nursing Assistant trainer teaches clinical. That individual will always be a licensed nurse. 

Nursing assistant students learn to provide patient care in a variety of healthcare settings. They will be skilled in cpr and safety. The course is state approved. Graduates can sit for the CNA Certification test. 

Classes are offered on days, evenings and even on weekends.  There is flexibility for just about anyone’s schedule. Obviously, if you pass the course you may then attempt to pass the certification test for certified nursing assistants.  

OakPointe Senior Care and Rehab Center

Michigan Career & Technical Institute

They offer free CNA training by way of the initiative of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The free training is intended to meet a high demand for nursing assistants in the area.  It is also intended to provide career opportunities for individuals who cannot afford these opportunities on their own. No one should be prevented from joining their desired job field because of a lack of funds.  

Classroom, lab and clinical instruction are provided.  This course will cover many topics.  Here are some examples. You will learn medical terminology and how to document patient notes. You will learn about dementia and taking care of the elderly.  You will also practice good communication skills.  CPR and first aid training is provided.  

Students need to master many skills. Here are some examples.  They must learn to handle a job that is physically demanding.  A CBA needs to have empathy and compassion.  They need to learn good emotional balance. The ability to multitask must be mastered. This course will help people sharpen their interpersonal communication skills. 

The school offers many support services to help students.  They even offer job placement assistance. 

This school is a public vocational school in the state.  They are settled in a country setting.  The school sits on more than 70 acres.  It was first established nearly 80 years ago.  The school has positive ratings and feedback.

Dearborn Adult Education

Dearborn Adult Education offers a CNA training program. The cost (not counting any scholarships and grants you might) is $1710. The course will allow students to sit for the state nursing assistant certification competency exam after completing the course in it’s entirety and with the necessary grades.

The Dearborn Adult Education CNA course takes about 11 weeks to complete. Students will spend most of those weeks receiving classroom instruction. There is also a clinical segment of the program that students must complete. This will be at a local healthcare facility. The clinical rotation will last for 5.5 hours each day.

This nursing assistant training class will learn to provide patient care and assistance. They will learn to successfully care for patients while also protecting their privacy and helping students to maintain as much independence as possible. These skills are taught through lectures as well as hands on experience including the week of daytime clinical rounds.

Avanti Career Institute

The Avanti Career Institute offers an excellent nursing assistant program. This course covers a wide range of CNA topics including teaching students any skills needed to successfully pass the state nursing assistant certification exam. Students will receive the theoretical and practical background needed to pass the competency test and to have good work prospects.

Students will learn in a variety of ways during the CNA training class. Instructors provide textbook and lecture instruction. Lab studies are also provided to CNA students to provide more knowledge and experience. Avanti Career Institute works with excellent nursing care facilities to provide their nursing assistant students with excellent hands on training so they can gain the necessary clinical experience needed to not only pass the certification exam but also to provide great care to patients when working in the future as a CNA.

This training school has an excellent facility. Their facility includes has a range equipment  on site that nursing assistants will commonly need to use in their day to day activities. This allows students to have a great working knowledge of the equipment before they work directly with patients. Graduates of this program are prepared for success in their new career.

Schoolcraft College

Schoolcraft College offers a 7 week Nursing Assistant Preparation Course. Five days of the 7 week program will be spent completing the clinical experience at local healthcare facilities. The course includes classroom instruction and hands on practice skills instruction. Finally, the course will include supervised clinical experience with direct patient contact. Graduates of this course will be able to set for the competency evaluated nursing assistant exam. The class does provide students with the skills and information they need to be able to succeed on the test and to become certified.

There are opportunities to receive some financial aid for this class. Some scheduling flexibility is also important which is why students need to meet with their academic advisor. This course is worth a total of 10 credits. Students will not pass the course if they do not maintain at least a 2.0 average. The nursing assistant classes are provided on the Livonia Campus.

CNA Examination Application in Michigan

Upon completion of a CNA program, you can apply to sit for the testing exam. The form to apply can be downloaded from www.prometric.com/NurseAide/MI. You will provide proof of your successful completion of the course. Once you take the exam and successfully pass both sections, you will receive your paperwork to become listed on the registry. This will occur about two weeks after you receiving your passing score.

[/su_highlight]This is for those who were certified in other states or have comparable training (such as nursing students or graduates or those who worked in healthcare within the military). If your request is approved, you will then submit your application to Prometric to allow you to be scheduled for the exam and move forward in the certification process.

CNA Testing Requirements in Michigan 

You must take a skills test where you show you can carry out random nursing assistant duties/skills safely and effectively. It will also be necessary to take a written test where you are tested on applicable knowledge you learned during your training. When you schedule your test, it is important to know that you will need to send $76.50 to Prometic to cover your registration fees. Another $100 will be due at the time of your test. These fees will also include the cost of being listed on the registry once you pass the test.

Out of State CNAs

It is important note not that Michigan does not allow you to become automatically certified if you hold a certification in another state. You can be exempt from needing to complete a training course. However, you will not be excused from taking the exam. You must sit for and pass the nursing assistant test in order to become certified within the state of Michigan.
