A CDL License is a license allowing individuals to operate commercial vehicles. This license must be obtained before operating a wide range of trucks used by businesses and for commercial purposes. Individuals can find programs training them to drive such trucks at career and technical school and often through trucking companies themselves.
CDL training will typically last for at least a few weeks. The training is designed to teach students all aspects of operating a commercial vehicle. They will learn how to drive in various conditions and locations. Truck driver trainees will learn how to maintain safety even in the most difficult of conditions.
The weight of the trucks being operated will depend on the CLD license an individual holds. For example, CDL-A licensed drivers can drive trucks that are towing trailers and other vehicles. The combined weight of the truck and trailer will be more than 26,0001 pounds. The trailer will have a weight of over 10,.000 pounds. There are other levels of licensing for individuals driving trucks that weight less or driving other types of commercial vehicles.
Individuals will be able to work for trucking corporations, delivery businesses and other businesses delivery merchandise from warehouses to stores or between stores. Some delivery trucks for stores and construction related businesses also require a driver to hold a commercial driver’s license. Again this will depend on the type and weight of trucks being driven by employees. The license an individual needs will depend on the weight of the truck and the trailer.
Commercial truck drivers should have a good driving record. Individuals can be denied employment if they have had DUI convictions. A company can also take into consideration a person’s driving record and any violations they have committed. Criminal records can also be considered when an individual is applying to drive commercial trucks. For example, a company can deny someone employment if they have been convicted of theft especially since the value of hauls being transported by drivers is often very great.
A commercial driver needs to have overall good health for their safety and that of those around them. They generally cannot have a history of high blood pressure (or at the very least no uncontrolled high blood pressure) or heart disease. A CDL-A driver cannot have diabetes, seizures and other medical problems that could pose a risk to the driver and to other people driving and riding as passengers on the highway. Companies and even truck driving schools can require an individual to undergo a physical and other health assessments before being hired.
Of course, a truck driver cannot have a history of alcohol or drug abuse. Some resolved problems might not exclude a person from being hired. But if a person has had recent convictions related to dug abuse or driving under the influence of drug or alcohol, they can expect to be denied employment as a truck driver.
CDL-A drivers can earn a good income. Income varies greatly depending on the materials being hauled, the delivery schedule and even the companies for which an individual is working. Some people end up owning and operating their own trucks. There is a good deal of overhead in doing so but some individuals earn an excellent salary overall by owning their own truck and trailer.
A CDL drivers work schedule will vary depending on the company a person is working for. Some individuals will be on the road for days at a time. There are others that will have daily driving requirements. A driver can certainly work a long day and log many hours during a week.
